Artist Statement:

Despair, Pain, Anger, Understanding, Acceptance, Transformation

This artwork was created through a conversation with the subconscious mind, a dialogue between awareness and what lies beneath it. I begin by covering the canvas in water, letting pigment move freely across the surface. Sometimes I guide it with my brush, breath or spit, sometimes I throw it and watch how it lands. I build intentional forms around these naturally created ones, then let the intersection between the two guide the rest of the painting. I relinquish control and allow the artwork to form beyond my understanding.

But this work was not formed just now; it was shaped over twenty-two years of experience, through the lives of those who influenced me, the world we share, and the existence that connects all things. I began art in pain, creating out of necessity during a life-threatening six-month sickness brought on by anxiety, depression, and an autoimmune disease. That time reshaped my perception of the world, deepening my understanding of fear and loneliness, and building a desire to hide within isolation rather than face a world that felt terrifying. My reality was shaped by pain, and I believed that existing in the present would only bring more of it.

Yet if a lotus seed perceived the world as a drowning blanket of mud, it would never manifest into a flower. Just as the mud feeds the lotus as it pushes upward to bloom, your suffering and anxieties may appear suffocating, yet they can serve as nutrients for growth. The water that once drowned you can become the pool of your transformation. As a pure and real form of alchemy, we can transmute our material experience into a deeper understanding of ourselves, of others, and of the world around us.
A ray of light piercing through the clouds, as beautiful as it is, cannot exist without the sun, the air it travels through, or the life that depends on its warmth. In the same way, you do not exist apart from the whole. Everything is interconnected. Look into your palm and feel the traces of all that was necessary for your being: your ancestors, the food that sustained your growth, and the experiences and people that shaped you.

Looking closer, At the atomic level, we are 99.999% nothing, yet within that emptiness, the same electromagnetic energy field that holds the universe together moves through us. When we peel away the layers of identity, we see that we are not separate from the whole around us. We are humanity, we are existence, we are the universe becoming aware of itself. In this recognition of the interconnected everything that exists within nothing arises peace that is complete and unconditional, the good that has no opposite.

I am that I am. You are that you are. Everything is.
